My First Year Of Uni Experience: Things I Was Concerned About

This has been my very first year at university and, although I still have a couple of things that I still have to conclude, I can say that my first year has been so far extremely good.

Since last October, I have been a freshman in the University Of Salerno, 69th in the world's best universities and 4th in Italy, in the faculty of foreign languages and literatures. Since I enjoyed my experience, I thought I could share with you my first impressions so far, and talk about a few points which I used to be very concerned about at first.

Let me briefly explain how my uni works, I have 7 to 8 exams in the whole academic year, each one with a certain amount of CFU, which are like points that you get per exam, in order to have a high score for your major, and marks go from 18 (minimum score) to 30/30 with merit (highest score); in my faculty almost all of the exams are mainly oral, or they can be both written and oral, and you do them in separate days.

Long story short, Italy has a pretty weird university system, but I still wanted to share my thoughts about it, and give some advices for all future freshmen, which every freshmen can relate to.

First thing first, let's talk about people. It is not impossible to make friends at uni, but you have to be careful about who is who. People at university are not very different from high school: some of them keep the high school group of friends state of mind, and some others just like to think about it as an individual thing, and to keep just a couple of real friends. I personally have tried to experience both of these options, and I found the second to work for me much better: a few friends just allow you to work better on your goal and keep track of each other's study programmes and, obviously, help each other. I went to my university without actually any of my friends and not knowing anyone, as I think most of us do/did, but I was able to get to know quite a few people, and I even found a lovely girl I really like and can be myself with.

Talking about competence, let me tell you something important: you do you. You do your exams for yourself, you check on your own marks, other people are on their own. The only reason why you should check on someone else's career is to keep yourself going and wanting to do always better. Remember that, and your first year - as well as your following years - will be golden for your career, I can guarantee.

Exams are not impossible to do. You can make it, you just need constance and patience, and your results will show up in the best way possible.

"University doesn't let me have time for my stuff", here's a solution: manage your time. This is the key of the organisational process, if you manage your time you'll still be able to do anything that you want plus be able to work it great at uni.

After I was able to check on how stuff worked in my uni, I have been able to see my friends, go to the beach, sleep the whole morning, go to bed late, read books and get an exam ready... The weird thing about this? I did it all in not even 3 weeks, and everything was eventually great.

"Uni doesn't let me have a social life", here's another solution: your social life is about your friends. Your real friends will understand if you can't go to that party because you have to study for that hard exam.

I don't think I can tell you about personal discoveries that I did this year because, of course, my university as well as my faculty can be different from anyone else's, but I think these can be the main things that anyone can see as a freshman!

Let me know if you'd like to get to know also about my experience in learning foreign languages, and if you are interested in any advices. I would love to help in any way!

Thanks for reading,
- The Golden Daisy, xxx
