Tips To Choose Your Outfit For That Special Occasion
But, even if the outfit choice is usually our favorite part in order to get ready for the occasion, it can also be quite tricky, since none of the clothes we try on seems good enough, everytime for a different reason, either if the event is all about us, or our loved ones.
Personally, I have struggled to choose what to wear several times, but the longest research was certainly the one for my 18th birthday dress, which made me almost loose my mind, but now I won't let clothes take advantage of me anymore. So I elaborated a few simple rules that I promised myself always to follow, no exception in any case, in order not to make those mistakes once again. Since the weddings, or birthdays season is almost here, ready to dominate the spring time, I thought these tips could be helpful for those of you who need to buy new pieces, or even just make a new combination of pieces you already have.
1. Never, I mean NEVER, buy your shoes first
Ok yes, this seems like an obvious thing to say, and even if I know you are probably thinking "oh what a new, I'm not that stupid", trust me, you can't imagine the impact that a pair of gorgeous shoes can have on the female mind. I am saying that because I was the first to always think about "dress first, shoes last" but a pair of flawless silver sandals caught my heart in september, whilst my birthday was in January, and I eventually started to search for my dress in December. Huge mistake I made, because I did not plan on falling in love with a gold and yellow dress. Yes, I had to give up on my beautiful silver shoes. Learn from my mistakes girls, we have all been through that.
2. Always consider the fabric
Doesn't matter if the dress is stunningly beautiful, or incredibly matches your eyes, or exalts your figure, if the fabric is not so right for the season, that gorgeous dress will become a super thigh cage. So, super important rule, always think about when the event is, and whether that dress has a good fabric or not: you don't want to burn out of a wool fabric in July, or freeze in a chiffon top in January.
An important tip for me, would also be to consider the quality of the fabric: is it easy to style, easy to wash (nobody can avoid unexpected events)? We don't want to be able to wear a lovely tank top only once.
3. Match colors to the occasion
I think this is more of a personal choice, but personally I love to respect some kind of color code, expecially based on the season the event occurs in. I feel like it leaves such an elegant impression to have your dress matching the colors of the season, but, of course, a touch of different colors is always welcome. For example, red or brown tones are perfect for fall, as well as pastel or bright colors are great for spring time. But nobody can deny the impact of a green dress in winter, as far as it is well styled for the occasion. But, of course, this is totally up to you.
4. Have an idea in mind first
Whether it's a bracelet you absolutely want to wear, a hairstyle you have been planning to style, or a specific type of fabric. Have an idea in mind, but be sure not to get too stuck on it, because, who knows, maybe you might fall in love with something totally different. But be sure to already have an idea of what you want when you go into stores. To me, the very first questions I ask myself are: dress or tailleur? Trousers or skirt? Heels or flat shoes?
If you need an inspiration for an outfit, I suggest to search for pictures on Pinterest, that always is my go-to website for ideas.
5. Take your time
Time really flies when it comes to events, they initially seem so very far in the time, and then they are a week away, and you still miss that necklace you wanted to get. What to do now to get your necklace? You hurry to the shop to buy it, so to finally be done with your outfit, but once you get there, they tell you the necklace has already been sold. Just a few hours earlier. So you go and search for a similar necklace, but none of those you find is prettier enough, and you end up going to that wedding without the nice necklace.
So the moral of the story is: you should have started to search for that necklace earlier.
If the event is winter, expecially, don't hesitate to start searching for a dress the previous fall, or even spring time: winter is, in my opinion, the hardest period of the year to find nice things in stores. Maybe this seems a bit too early, but trust me, you'll be relieved to have such a long amount of time. But be sure not to hurry things up too much: only get the dress if you really love it, because you have plenty of time anyway.
These are just my top rules to follow when it comes to get ready for a special occasion, because I of course do not want to make the same mistakes over again, and these are simply life savers to me.
Do you already follow these rules, or maybe have even more advices you want to share? Let me know what you think here below, I would love to read some of your thoughts!
